The Horizon League portion of the UDM women's tennis schedule got off to a rousing start on Friday night as the Titans routed Green Bay, 7-0, in a neutral court meeting in Kalamazoo.
The Titans are now 3-5 overall (1-0 HL) in dual match play this season, while Green Bay fell to 0-5 (0-1 HL).
Green Bay launched its only real attack at Detroit in doubles, as the Phoenix claimed an 8-4 win in the No. 2 flight to match the tidy 8-1 victory posted by Svetlana Flankova and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom in the third slot. Detroit then captured the opening doubles point when Annie Moore and Zeljka Minic grabbed an 8-2 triumph at No. 1.
The Titans only lost one set in rolling through six singles victories to complete their whitewash. Erin Weldon didn't lose a game in posting a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles, while Minic (No. 2) and Flankova (No. 3) weren't too far off that pace, each of them putting a 6-0, 6-2 victory into the books.
“Overall it was a good team win, but we came out slow in a few individual matches, and we cannot afford to start slow, ever,” Detroit coach Daron Montgomery said.
The Titans return to action on Sunday when they host Bowling Green in a 6:00 p.m. match-up at the Franklin Athletic Center in Southfield.
