The Detroit women's tennis team captured a hard-fought 4-3 win over visiting Bowling Green on Sunday night at Franklin Athletic Club in a marathon match that went nearly four hours.
The Titans took the early advantage by winning the doubles point over a short-handed Falcon squad when the No. 1 combo of Annie Moore and Zeljka Minic held serve at 7-6 to clinch the doubles victory for the Red, White and Blue. Detroit needed only that win, coupled with a default win at No. 3, to get things going.
Detroit went into the singles portion of play up 2-0 (BGSU forfeited the #6 singles contest), needing just two wins in five matches to secure the overall victory. Still, the Falcons' top four netters gave the Titans all they could handle, with BGSU first winning at No. 4 singles to narrow UDM's lead to 2-1. But after Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom made easy work of her opponent at the No. 5 hole, the home team was up by a margin of 3-1.
All three of the remaining contests went a full three sets, with Titan senior Annie Moore clinching the overall match triumph for UDM with her 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 success over BGSU's Kelsey Jakupcin. Moore had been down 3-0 in the third set before rallying for the victory.
“I thought our team did their best job of the season in terms of flat-out competing. Our five singles players went out there and got into battle at every position,” coach Daron Montgomery noted. “Bowling Green gave us all we could handle, and our players responded favorably. Even in the singles matches we lost, I was really proud of our student-athletes for their effort. They raised the bar tonight against a well-coached opponent.”
With the win over Bowling Green (5-2), Detroit improved its overall record to 4-5 on the season. Next up on the docket is a match-up against Duquesne on March 1 in Boca Raton, FL.
