Box Score
The Titans continued their two-game swing in Pennsylvania on Sunday as the red, white and blue dropped an 18-8 decision to Robert Morris at Joe Walton Stadium.
Sophomore
Matt Gregson (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic) notched two goals and an assist on the day and senior
Kevin Demorest (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm) had three helpers. Freshman
Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) was able to find the back of the net twice while junior
Pat O'Shea (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) added a marker and an assist.
“We played well, especially in the second half,” said head coach
Matt Holtz. “Right now, our biggest problem is playing young at times, making a lot of freshmen mistakes, but I think we did a good job of competing with a team that has a chance to be ranked at some point this season.”
Detroit trailed by nine at the half, 12-3, when the Titans staged a furious rally to get back in the game. After netting a goal with just five seconds to go in the half, UDM tallied four straight to start the third to pull within five, 12-7. Senior
Michael Schumacher (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central) started the run with a quick netter just a minute into the third. That was followed by Harris' tally.
“One of our biggest problems this year has been the third period,” said Holtz. “We have not played well after the half and today, we were able to get some early goals and tighten the game up.”
After some great Titan defense forcing a RMU turnover, sophomore
Brad Janer (Novi, Mi/Detroit Catholic Central) broke through the offensive zone and fired one past the Colonial goalkeeper. Demorest then posted a score to cut the Titan deficit to just five, 12-7.
Unfortunately that was as lose as Detroit would get as RMU had the last three goals in the third to eventually pull away for the win.
Detroit got off to a slow start as the Colonials scored the first five goals, before freshman
Vince Wigdahl (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley) was able to get the Titans on the board with 18 seconds left in the first period. Even then, RMU closed out the first with another two goals inside 18 seconds to take a 7-1 advantage.
The second stanza saw the Titans pick up their play, outshooting the Colonials 17-10, after being outmanned in that category 16-7 in the first. Schumacher got Detroit closer with a goal just one minute into the second, but once again, RMU went on a 5-0 run to open a 12-2 lead. The run was ended with just five seconds to go in the half as Gregson took a feed from Demorest who put it in between the pipes.
“Gregson is playing great and getting Demorest back healthy has really helped us the last two games,” added Holtz.
The Titans will have a day off before they head to North Carolina to face the nationally ranked Tar Heels. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
