Freshman pitcher Kara Spinelli (Newman, CA/Orestrimba) picked up her first collegiate victory in grand fashion leading the Detroit Titans softball team to its first win of the season with a 5-0 triumph over Holy Cross Sunday afternoon at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, FL.
Spinelli shut down Holy Cross going the distance scattering only five hits in seven scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Offensively, Detroit (1-6) was paced by juniors Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Sebewaing Area) and Jessica Liebner (Ortonville, MI/Brandon) along with senior Courtney Gill (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott) who each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore Breana Sesoko (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) also went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
With the game scoreless in the fourth inning, Gill led off with a single followed by Sesoko's two-run shot to give the Titans a 2-0 lead.
UDM sent eight runners to the plate and added three more runs in the seventh inning to close out the victory.
In the first game against Niagara, Detroit fell behind 5-0 through the fourth inning. The Titans were able to rally in the sixth inning with three runs as Houthoofd ended up on a third base off a fly ball that was unable to be fielded and ruled a three-base error. Sophomore Ellen Sinclair (Chatham, ON/Chatham-Kent) drove in the run on a single which was later followed by a two-run triple by junior Kristin Sclater (Taylor, MI/Kennedy) to plate Gill and Sesoko pulling the Titans within two runs at 5-3.
Sinclair finished the game going a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate while Sclater went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Titans continue play at the Rebel Games Tournament with two games on Mon., Mar. 2 against Lehigh and Fairfield at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
