Titans Roll Over Duquesne, 5-2, In Women's Tennis

Box Score

Spring Break for the Detroit women's tennis team began in fine fashion as the Titans rolled over Duquesne, 5-2, on Sunday in Boca Raton, FL.

UDM took the early advantage in the match by winning two of three tightly-contested doubles contests to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. After two matches were split, Detroit's No. 2 tandem of Svetlana Flankova and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom secured the doubles point with an 8-5 victory.

Thunderstorms arrived before singles play began but, after a 90-minute delay, Detroit soon went up 3-0 after Sjoberg-Sundstrom and Erin Weldon won straight-set triumphs at the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively.

With her team needing just one more win to secure the overall match, the Titans' Aneta Maricevic won 7-6 (2), 6-3 at No. 3 to seal the deal. Annie Moore and Flankova – both of whom had won their first sets – then played 10-point match tiebreakers to finish out the day, with Moore winning at No. 1 and Flankova losing in the fourth flight, resulting in the overall outcome of 5-2.

It was the third straight win for Titans, who now stand 5-5 on the year. UDM will play Monday at Barry University in Miami at 10 a.m.
