The Detroit women's track and field team totaled 29 points to earn sixth at the 2009 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships, held over the weekend at the James Hollensteiner Track Complex in Greencastle, IN.
The women had a number of top 10 performances led by the 4x400m squad of seniors
Jennifer DeFauw (Harper Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe North) and
Tiffany James (Westland, MI/Wayne Memorial), sophomore
Sequoyia Calhoun (Belleville, MI/Belleville) and junior
Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH/Zanesville), who earned third with a time of 3:59.56.
“The relay was a great finish and we hope to carry the energy from it and the meet to outdoors and live up to our full potential,” said head coach
Guy Murray.
Calhoun went on to have one of the top individual races on the day taking fourth in the 400m in 57.87.
“Sequoyia has emerged as a top flight competitor,” Murray said. “Her 400 was just .04 from a UDM record and it was the fastest on a 200 track.”
James had a pair of scoring events placing sixth in both the 60m (7.95) and the 200m (26.15). Also earning points on the day were Titan senior throwers
Brittany Horne (Okemos, MI/Okemos) and
Danielle Poulin (Sterling Heights, MI/Warren Cousino) in the shot put as Poulin's 12.62m/41'05.00” mark was good for fourth, while Horne's 12.29m/40'04.00” heave was fifth.
A number of other Titans put forth some nice performances, but just came up short of scoring. DeFauw was ninth in the mile with a time of 5:27.02, while Kalkstein was eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.64m/34'11.00”. Sophomore
Alena Bower (North Branch, MI/North Branch) was eighth in the high jump (1.48m/4'10.25”) and senior
Ashley Schinske (Paw Paw, MI/Paw Paw) took 10th in the long jump with a mark of 4.93m/16'10.25”.
“We had a good meet putting some good things together to build on for the outdoors,” added Murray.
The Titans will have one more indoor race to earn some qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, as Detroit is set to compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational next weekend in South Bend, IN.
