The Detroit Titans softball team fell short to Fairfield, 10-7, in an offensive slugfest on Monday afternoon at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, FL. which saw both teams combine for 17 runs and 29 hits.
For the game, Detroit (2-7) tallied it highest scoring output of the season plating seven runs on 16 hits while Fairfield garnered 10 runs on 13 hits.
The Titans had five players with multiple hits led by freshman Rachel Copple (Dearborn Heights, MI / Allen Park Cabrini) who broke out of an offensive slump going 3-for-4 at the plate. Senior Jacqueline Nortman (Groves, TX/Msgr. Kelly Catholic) and junior Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Sebewaing Area) each went 2-for-5 with a combined three RBI. Sophomore Ellen Sinclair (Chatham, ON/Chatham-Kent) hit 2-for-3 with a RBI while junior Courtney Gill (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott) went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Freshman Kara Spinelli (Newman, CA/Orestrimba) picked up the loss on the mound while the Titans committed five errors defensively compared to one by Fairfield.
After a scoreless first inning, UDM took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Nortman singled in junior Jessica Liebner (Ortonville, MI/Brandon).
Fairfield responded in the third with three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
Detroit came right back in the fourth to regain the lead with three more runs for a 4-3 advantage highlighted by singles from Liebner, Copple, Houthoofd and Gill.
The Stags then staged their most productive inning plating four runs in the fifth to move ahead 7-4. In the bottom of the frame, Detroit responded as junior Kristin Sclater (Taylor, MI/Kennedy) hit a double and was driven by another double from freshman Renee Zaccagni (Macomb, MI / Dakota). With two outs, Nortman reached on an error which allowed Zaccagni to score followed by another Houthoofd RBI single to bring in Nortman tying the game at 7-7.
However, Fairfield tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning to go up 10-7 while the Titans could not get on the board in the final two frames.
The Titans return to action on Tuesday, March 3 with games against Holy Cross at 3 p.m. and St. Francis (Pa.) at 5 p.m.
