Butler Squeaks Past Titans In Women's Tennis, 4-3

Final Results

In a women's tennis nail biter that went down to the third set of the evening's final singles match, Detroit dropped a 4-3 heart breaker to Butler on Friday night at the Franklin Athletic Club, ending UDM's seven-match winning streak.

Detroit
fell to 9-6 overall and lost its first Horizon League match-up in four starts. Butler – the defending league runner-up – advanced to 2-0 in conference play and 7-8 overall.

With the match knotted at 3-all, all eyes were focused on the No. 5 singles duel, where Titan freshman Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom took on BU rookie Cam Thompson. Sjoberg-Sundstrom won the first set 6-1, but Thompson came back to win two straight sets by 6-3 and 6-2, closing out the team triumph for Butler.

Detroit
had gone out on top early, winning the doubles point thanks to victories by the tandem of Annie Moore and Zeljka Minic at No. 1 (8-5), and by Aneta Maricevic and Erin Weldon at No. 3 (8-6). Detroit also got points in singles at No. 6 by Weldon (6-0, 6-1) and in the No. 1 flight by Moore (6-4, 6-3) - the latter tying the match at 3-3 - but was unable to capture one more battle to secure the match.

The Titans get right back onto the courts on Sunday morning, traveling to Cleveland State for another key conference match-up.
