Box Score
The Detroit Titans softball team took an early lead against visiting Butler but could not hold on as the Titans fell 13-6 in Horizon League action on Sunday at Buysse Ballpark.
Windy, wet and cold playing conditions took its toll on both teams defensively as UDM (4-21, 0-6 HL) and Butler (11-16, 3-3 HL) combined 10 total errors.
Offensively, Detroit posted six runs on eight hits and was led by sophomore Ellen Sinclair (Chatham, ON/Chatham-Kent) and junior Courtney Gill (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott), who each went 2-for-4 with a combined two runs scored and a RBI.
Butler tallied 13 runs on 18 hits and did most of its damage via the long ball as Erin Falkenberry went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, coupled with Alex Boros and Malloy Winters, who both hit home runs while going 2-for-5 and 4-for-5, respectively.
After Butler posted a run to open the game in the first inning, UDM went to work in the second inning as Gill reached on a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and was brought home on a fielding error by the BU shortstop. Sophomore Chelsea Lathrop (Colleyville, TX/Grapevine) singled to left field to plate sophomore Kristin Sclater (Taylor, MI/Kennedy) while sophomore Breana Sesoko (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) later scored on another fielding error to give UDM a 3-1 lead.
After Butler pulled within one run at 3-2 in the third inning, the Bulldogs tacked on three more runs in the fourth aided, by three costly Detroit errors to take a 5-3 lead.
UDM responded in the fifth as Gill hit an RBI single to score junior Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Unionville Sebewaing Area), pulling the Titans within one run at 5-4.
Butler put the game away in the sixth inning on two big hits as Falkenberry hit a three-run homer soon followed by a three-run triple by Erin Jackson, to take a commanding 10-4 lead.
The Titans added two runs in the sixth and seventh inning on a RBI single by Lathrop and fly out by sophomore Kristin Sclater (Taylor, MI/Kennedy) but it was not enough as the Bulldogs also added two run for the 13-6 win.
The Titans continue Horizon League play with a game against Youngstown State on Wednesday, at 5 p.m.
