In a rematch of last year's Horizon League tournament third-place showdown, Detroit prevailed over Cleveland State once again, this time edging the Vikings, 4-3, in an exciting dual match on Sunday morning at CSU.
The Titans improve to 10-6 overall, while boosting their conference worksheet to 4-1. CSU falls to 11-8 (1-1 HL).
Detroit grabbed the upper hand early, sweeping all three doubles matches to establish a 1-0 lead. Annie Moore and Zeljka Minic prevailed in the No. 1 flight by 8-5, while Svetlana Flankova and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrong took No. 2, 8-4. Aneta Maricevic and Erin Weldon posted the most lopsided victory of Detroit's three tandems, winning 8-3 at No. 3.
As the singles duels unfolded, Moore posted a convincing victory at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-2, while Sjoberg-Sundstrom scored a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 5. Even as Flankova bowed to CSU's Jackie Tabb at No. 4, 6-3, 6-4, the Titans still had three more chances to close out the match.
Minic took care of that assignment, posting a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Melissa Holzinger at No. 2, giving Detroit its fourth and match-clinching point. The Titans couldn't hold on in either of the remaining singles matches after the overall victory had been decided, as CSU came out on top at No. 3 and No. 6, both those matches going the full three sets.
“Our players came out focused this morning, and they did everything we asked them to do,” said assistant coach Sam Poole, who guided the Titans on Sunday. “It says a lot about our team, the way they responded today in light of a devastating home loss to Butler on Friday. I am so proud of our effort today.”
Detroit returns to the courts on April 10, when it hosts Milwaukee in another Horizon League match-up.
