Titans Edged by St. Francis (Pa.) as Late Rally Falls Short

Box Score

After defeating Holy Cross, 3-2, earlier in the afternoon, the Detroit Titans softball team mounted a valiant comeback but could not get over the hump as the team fell 9-6 to St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, FL.

Detroit (3-8) found itself in the middle of an offensive slugfest for the second consecutive day as both teams combined for 15 runs on 26 totals hits.

St. Francis (Pa.) built a large 9-2 lead in the fifth inning and threatened to mercy UDM. However, the Titans did not quit and responded with a four-run rally in the seventh to make it a game. Freshman Rachel Copple (Dearborn Heights, MI / Allen Park Cabrini) led off with a single and then was out at second as senior Jacqueline Nortman (Groves, TX/Msgr. Kelly Catholic) reached on a fielder's choice. Junior Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Sebewaing Area) then belted her first home run of the season with a two-run shot. With two outs, junior Courtney Gill (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott) and sophomore Ellen Sinclair (Chatham, ON/Chatham-Kent) drew back-two-back walks and were driven in by a double from junior Kristin Sclater (Taylor, MI/Kennedy) to pull UDM with in three runs at 9-6. Junior Jessica Liebner (Ortonville, MI/Brandon) almost pulled UDM within one run as she gave the ball ride to deep right field but it didn't have enough to clear the fence and was caught for the final out of the game.

For the game, Detroit had 11 hits led by Liebner and Nortman who each went 2-for-4 while Copple hit 2-for 3. Houthoofd went 1-for-3 with two RBI along with freshman Renee Zaccagni (Macomb, MI/Dakota) who also went 1-for-3 while Sclater recorded two RBI with two doubles.

The Titans have the day off on Wednesday and return to action on Thursday, March 5 with games against Fairfield at 3 p.m. and Maine at 5 p.m.
