For the second consecutive game, UDM ran into a solid performance by the opposing pitcher as UIC's Ashley Hewitt allowed only three hits with seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Hewitt also hit 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Detroit mounted an early threat in the first inning as Nortman led things off with a single and was moved over the second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Unionville Sebewaing Area). After a two-out walk from junior Courtney Gill (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott), Hewett committed a baulk to move the runners to second and third base. However, Hewett regrouped and got sophomore Kristin Sclater (Taylor, MI/Kennedy) to fly out in the swirling wind to end the inning.
UIC took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first on an unearned run as Sarah Clynes scored from second base on a Titan throwing error off a ground ball.
The Titans had runners on first and second with one out in the third inning but could not bring home the tying run as Hewett once again got out of trouble retiring the last two batters.
UIC padded its lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning as the Flames batted through the line up posting three runs on five hits and closed out the game in the fifth with four runs on five hits coupled with two UDM errors.
