The UDM women's tennis team returned to the courts for the first time in nearly two weeks when the squad hosted Horizon League foe Milwaukee on Friday morning at the Franklin Athletic Club. The Titans showed no signs of rust, sweeping all three doubles contests to open up the day and then did the same in singles play going a perfect 6-for-6 to shut out the visiting Panthers by a final score of 7-0.
With the impressive victory, UDM improved to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference, while Milwaukee fell to 8-9, 3-3 in the HL.
Senior
Annie Moore (St.Clair, MI/St.Clair) led the way for Detroit in singles, posting a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Kelly Dvaric at #1 position. On her heels, also coasting to straight set victories, were junior
Svetana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21), freshman
Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) and sophomore
Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) at 4, 5 and 6 singles.
"I think our team played well, especially after having 12 days of only practice, without competition,” said Flankova. “Our team's goal was to get off to a good start today and we did that for the most part, but even in the matches where we lost the first couple of games, everyone found a way to get the job done. Milwaukee is a good team, but one that we probably should beat, and a convincing win against them is definitely gives us more confidence going into our conference match next weekend against UIC, one of the strongest teams in the Horizon League."
UWM pushed Detroit to a third set at both the #2 and #3 matches, but the red, white and blue found the winner's circle at both spots, first with senior
Aneta Maricevic (Hamilton, ONT/Glendale Secondary)at 3 and then senior
Zeljka Minic (Zagreb, Croatia/Sport) at #2 in the days final contest.
Detroit returns to action on Tuesday, when the Titans host in-state rival Oakland at 2 p.m.
