Men’s Tennis Drops First Round HL Match-Up

Box Score

Playing in its first Horizon League Championship match in 14 years, the UDM men's tennis suffered a 4-0 setback at the hands of No. 2 UIC on Friday afternoon at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

The seventh-seeded Titans lost the doubles point to start the match falling 8-6 at No. 1 and 8-2 at No. 3. The UDM duo of freshmen Dean Masuda (Dearborn, MI/Dearborn) and Gino McCathney (Livonia, MI/Stevenson) did have a 7-5 lead at No. 2, before the match was stopped.

In singles, Detroit had a lead at No. 1 as junior Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola)  was ahead of Sebastian Lystad 6-4, 0-1, before that match was called after the Flames earned singles victories at No. 6, 3 and 1 to clinch the match.

With the loss, UDM enters the consolation bracket where, with two wins, they could finish as high as fifth place. The Titans head back to the courts on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. when Detroit faces No. 6 Valparaiso.
