Women’s Tennis Comes Up Short In Horizon League Championship

Box Score

The UDM women's tennis team battled hard against top-seeded UIC right from the start, but Detroit was unable to knock the Flames from the championship pedestal as the Titans fell, 4-1, in their first ever Horizon League Championship match.

"We played hard, but we just came up short against a great team and program,” said head coach Daron Montgomery. “While we are disappointed we lost, these student-athletes should be proud that they did something that had never been done at Detroit. Our seniors will always remember today, and the feeling they had playing for a championship. No one can take that away from them.”

The day started with the red, white and blue dropping the doubles point as UIC took the top flight, 8-4, and the second position, 8-2.

In singles, Detroit got on the board as sophomore Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) won her match at No. 6, 6-1, 6-3. The Flames then secured victories at No. 1, 2 and 3 to earn its 13th-straight Horizon League title.

With the loss, UDM ended the season at 15-8, eclipsing the school record for wins in a season as well as reaching the championship match of the conference tournament for the first time in program history.
