The Detroit Titans softball team saw its three-game win streak come to an end at the hands of visiting Cleveland State who posted 3-0 and 10-0 wins over the Titans Thursday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark.
Detroit (7-23, 3-8 HL) had a hard time mounting any offense against CSU (20-12, 8-2 HL) junior ace pitcher Amanda Macenko. The two-time Horizon League Pitcher of the Year was on top of her game winning both outings with a total of 22 strikeouts (16 in game one, six in second) while allowing only four total UDM hits.
Junior Jill Perry (Ortonville, MI/ Brandon) had a solid outing in game one going the distance allowing only three runs (two earned) with a strikeout.
Sophomore Ellen Sinclair (Chatham, ON/Chatham-Kent) record a double along with a single by sophomore Breana Sesoko (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) in game one while juniors Erica Houthoofd (Unionville, MI/Unionville Sebewaing Area) and Caitlin McPartlin (Trenton, MI/Trenton) tallied and double and single respectively in game two.
The Titans had its best opportunity to get to Macenko in the first inning of game one as Sinclair doubled to left center field with two outs but could not be driven home by junior Courtney Gill (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott).
Cleveland State added two runs on a RBI by Danielle Young and a UDM throwing error to move ahead 2-0.
The Vikings added another run in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Shalyn Adams for a 3-0 lead and eventual victory.
In second stanza, CSU jumped out to an early lead and did most of its damage via the long ball as the Vikings went up 3-0 in the first inning off a three-run homer by Lia Gordon.
Detroit missed a golden opportunity in the fourth inning as Houthoofd lead off with a double to left center field and advanced to third on a fly out by Sinclair. However, Macenko retired the next two batters to end the threat.
The Vikings came right back in the bottom half of the frame with four runs aided by two costly UDM errors to take a 7-0 lead. From there, CSU never looked back adding three runs in the fifth highlighted by a two-run homer by Amy Powell.
The Titans travel to Chicago, IL for a three-game Horizon League series against UIC beginning Friday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. EST.
