The Detroit Titans softball team closed out the 2009 regular season with an 8-2 Horizon League setback to visiting Loyola at Buysse Ballpark Sunday afternoon.
Detroit (7-40, 3-17 HL) enters the 2009 Horizon League Tournament as the ninth-seed and will face Loyola (26-22, 14-10 HL), who enters the tournament as the fourth-seed, on Thursday, May 7 at 1 p.m. on the campus of host Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Titans had a tough time mounting any offense against Loyola junior pitcher Amy Solava who picked up the win allowing two runs on two hits with four strikeouts.
Sophomores Ellen Sinclair (Chatham, ON/Chatham-Kent) and Breana Sesoko (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) each led UDM going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Solava also paced Loyola from the plate going 3-for-4 with a RBI and run while sophomore Jenna Grim hit 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Loyola took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Stephanie Cihlar reached on a fielding error and was brought home on a Grim double.
The Ramblers then took a commanding 6-0 lead in the second tallying five runs on six hits. Detroit got on the board in the bottom half as junior Courtney Gill (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott) walked and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Junior Jessica Liebner (Ortonville, MI/Brandon) then reached on a fielding error which also allowed Gill to score from second.
With the bases loaded in the fourth, Liebner grounded out to the shortstop plating Sinclair to pull the Titans closer at 6-2.
However, Loyola tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh inning while keeping Detroit off the board en rote to the 8-2 win.
