UDM Captures Four Flight Titles At IPFW Invitational

IPFW Fall Invitational Results

It was quite an opening week for the Detroit men's tennis team as the Titans had three players go undefeated in singles as well as a doubles tandem en route to winning four flight championships at the IPFW Fall Invitational.

“It was an extremely positive start for us,” said head coach Grant Asher. “Our guys are very passionate and they have worked very hard in developing their game.”

Sunday's tournament started with the last of the singles' matches as Detroit took on IPFW. Senior netter Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) got the winning started with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Francisco Sigaud at No. 1 singles. The win pushed his UDM record to 28-4 and extended his winning streak to 10 straight matches dating back to last season

Senior Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) and freshman Alex Latosinsky (Sarnia, ON/St. Christopher's) then won their respective singles titles. Troy closed out a 3-0 mark at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Felipe Gama, while Latosinsky prevailed at No. 5 sweeping the flight with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 score against Junya Saruta.

Freshman Chris Cheung (Mississauga, ON / Erindale Secondary) also had an impressive opening week in singles action going 2-1 at No. 6, defeating Rodrigo Tamashiro, 6-2, 6-2 in today's final contest.

In doubles, Necajevs and Latosinsky finished what they started on Saturday with two wins to take the No. 1 flight. The Titan duo opened the day picking off IUPUI's Dan Klingenberg and Bren Vasalakis, 9-7, and won the bracket with an 8-5 triumph over DePauw's Scott Sandager and Will Gates

“We played three good teams here and won four flight championships so now we will go into next week at Michigan State with a harder field and hopefully the confidence from this weekend will help us out,” added Asher.

Detroit will continue its fall season on Friday when the Titans head to East Lansing to compete in the Frank Beeman Invitational.
