BGSU Invitational Final Results
The University of Detroit Mercy's women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the Bowling Green State University Invitational Sunday evening at the Keefe Courts in Bowling Green, OH. The Titans had two athletes finish third in their specific singles flight, while two UDM doubles pairs also captured third place finishes.
Freshman
Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico) was Detroit's representative in Flight 1 Singles and placed third after defeating Julia Breuss of Eastern Michigan. Espinosa won her main draw match yesterday against Sarah Lynch (YSU) by scores of 6-0, 6-3 and was then defeated by Christine Chiricosta (BGSU), 6-2, 6-1.
Senior
Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) finished third after defeating Hunter Bullock (IUPUI) in Flight 2 Singles by scores of 6-2 and 6-2. Yesterday, Flankova captured a win in her main draw match against Jill Ducro (Xavier) (6-1, 6-1) and then came up short against Amy Recht (IPFW), 7-5, 6-2, in the semi-final round.
In doubles action, Titan sophomore
Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) and Espinosa placed third as they defeated a duo from Cincinnati (Ismail/Wise) by a score of 8-5, while Detroit freshman
Victoria Baca (Quito, Ecuador) and junior
Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI / Mattawan) took home third place after claiming an 8-6 win over Viscovi and Forsyth from IPFW.
The Titans will return to action when they compete in the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing Sept. 25-27.
