University of Detroit Mercy's women's tennis team played in its first away dual match of the 2010 campaign and fell by a score of 6-1 to Western Michigan at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo Saturday evening.

The Broncos opened up the match capturing the doubles point with wins at all three slots. Detroit senior Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) and sophomore Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) played at No.1 and dropped an 8-4 decision, while sophomore Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) and freshman Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) mirrored their effort at No. 2 doubles.

Espinosa earned Detroit's lone point on the night as she won her opening set in singles, 7-6, against WMU junior Amanda Moccia at the No. 2 spot and then won her second set, 6-4. Sjoberg-Sundstrom was UDM's representative at No. 1 singles and she won her first set, 6-3, versus WMU freshman Maggie Remynse, but Remynse claimed the second set, 6-4, and the third, 1-0.

The Titans will return to action when they face Michigan State in East Lansing on Sunday at 4 p.m.
