It all came down to one final match, but a hard fought third set at No. 3 singles proved to be the difference as the Titan men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision on Friday night in its Horizon League opener at Wright State.
The match was tied at 3 apiece as the final singles affair was going into its third set. Senior
Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) was locked in a hotly contested battle with Wright State's Landem Newman. After winning the first set, 6-4, Troy dropped the second by the same score and was just upended in the third, 6-3, as the home team pulled out the win.
Detroit (6-7, 0-1 HL) fought back to tie it up after dropping the doubles point to take three singles matches. At No. 1,
Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) cruised to a 6-2, 6-4, win over Nick Camilleri, improving his career HL record to 8-0 in dual matches.
The Titans also picked up triumphs at No. 5 and No. 6. Freshman
Cesar Escobar Serrano (Merliot, El Salvador/Educame) dominated Jan Alafriz, 6-2, 6-3, while rookie
Chris Cheung (Mississauga, ON/Erindale Secondary) powered his way to a 6-0, 7-6 (4), victory against Evan Neuman.
UDM will end its busy four game six-day schedule on Sunday as the Titans stay in the conference with a trip to Butler. Match time is set for 9:30 a.m.
