The Titans made it a sweep of the Badger State as the Detroit women's tennis team rebounded from dropping the doubles point to win, 4-3, against the Milwaukee Panthers on Sunday morning.
After sweeping Green Bay yesterday, UDM (7-10, 5-1 HL) has now won three straight and six of its last seven matches.
“The team is working really hard right now,” said head coach
Sam Poole. “They are playing with each other and believing in each other a lot more then at the start of the year.”
The Titan come from behind triumph was accomplished with some great play in singles as four Detroit netters won their matches in straight sets.
Freshman
Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) was victorious at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2. Junior
Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) dominated an opponent for the second straight day in winning 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth slot, while freshman
Victoria Baca (Quito, Ecuador/El Sauce) made quick work at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-1 decision.
The clinching match came at No. 3 as sophomore
Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win.
In the doubles portion to start the morning, Detroit was able to secure one match as the tandem of sophomore
Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) and senior
Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) earned an 8-4 tally.
UDM will end the regular season next weekend with a pair of home matches as Detroit welcomes Cleveland State and Youngstown State into the Titan Tennis Complex.
