Men's Tennis

Senior Day, Playoff Berth & Battle Of HL’s Top Netters Headline Men’s Tennis Weekend

The tennis regular season will come to an end this weekend as the Titans will be busy with back-to-back matches against Cleveland State and Youngstown State. Both matches are scheduled to be played on campus at the Titan Tennis Complex.

Detroit will square off against the Vikings (16-6, 6-0 HL) on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., and against the Penguins (1-13, 0-6 HL) on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

Prior to Sunday's match, the Titans will honor its two seniors in Pjotrs Necajevs and Patrick Troy, two players who transferred to Detroit and quickly helped legitimize the program.

The weekend will have a major impact on wither the Titans will make the conference championships. Right now, the men are at 7-10, 1-4 in the HL and holding onto the sixth and final playoff seed thanks to a tiebreaker over Valparaiso (1-4 HL). Two wins and Detroit will get in as the sixth seed, while a 1-1 weekend will see the red, white and blue scoreboard watching to see if Valpo drops at least one match to Butler or Wright State.

Saturday's match against Cleveland State will also feature a battle of the top tennis players in the Horizon League and quite possibly a battle for HL Player of the Year. Necajevs is 27-4 at No. 1 singles and 5-0 in conference play, while CSU's Phil Orno is 27-9, 6-1 in the league. Necajevs, the reigning HL Player of the Year, defeated Orno, the 2008 HL Player of the Year, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-4 last season but fell earlier in the fall campaign to the Vikings' No. 1, 6-4, 6-2.
