Fourth Quarter Rally Ends Titans Bid For Road Win

Box Score

After recovering from an early deficit, the UDM men's lacrosse team surged ahead to take a lead into the fourth, but a late rally by the home team on a cold and cloudy day put an end to the potential road victory as St. Joseph's defeated Detroit, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

Junior Matt Gregson (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic) led the way with his second straight hat trick ending the contest with three goals and an assist. In the last three games, the Titan midfielder has nine goals and two assists and now has 16 goals and 21 points on the year.

The Titans (2-10, 1-4 MAAC) took an early 2-1 lead in the first after back-to-back goals from Gregson and freshman Joel Matthews (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary). St. Joseph's (2-10, 2-3 MAAC) came back with three straight markers to end the first with a 4-2 lead.

Detroit's defense owned the next two periods blanking the Hawks en route to taking a 5-4 lead. In the second, freshman Mike Fields (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake ) hit the back of the net at the 13:23 mark, while Gregson found freshman Tyler Staruch (Brighton, MI/Brighton) for the rookie's 10th of the season, a score that also gave UDM five players on the year with 10 or more goals.

In the third, freshman Brandon Davenport (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/GP North), who was 13-of-19 in face-offs, won the battle to start the second half and the ball quickly swung to Gregson, who finished off the play by beating the keeper. That was all the scoring for the third period, but Detroit took a two goal lead in the fourth, 6-4, on Gregson's final tally of the day with 13:09 left in the game.

From there, the Hawks were able to mount a rally with four straight netters, broken up by a Matthew's goal a little more than midway through the period, and six of the next seven goals to win the MAAC contest.

Freshman goalie A.J. Levell (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) had 11 saves on the day. Davenport picked up a team-high seven goundballs, while freshman defender Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary) caused a game-best three turnovers and scooped up four GB's.

Detroit will look to shake off the loss as the Titans head to upstate New York to face conference foe Canisius on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
