It was a battle for positioning in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament as Detroit and Cleveland State hooked up for an important battle on Saturday, but the Vikings were just able to get by UDM, 4-3, on the Titan Tennis Complex.

Detroit (7-11, 5-2 HL) won three singles matches on the day as the Titans attempted a comeback after dropping the doubles point.

Freshman Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) won her match in the first spot, 6-4, 6-3, while junior Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) continued her strong play of late with a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Weldon has now won four in a row, all by straight sets, and five of her last six matches.

The final singles win came with a great effort from sophomore Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) as she battled the cold and winds to take No. 3, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6.

Sjoberg-Sundstrom also was a part of the Titans' winning doubles team as she played with senior Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) for a 9-7 triumph.

Detroit will close out the regular season tomorrow as the Titans host Youngstown State (6-11, 4-3 HL) at 1:30 p.m., at the Titan Tennis Complex. The winner of the match will receive the third seed in next week's Horizon League Championship.
