The Titans battled their way back from early deficits but were just not able to get the crucial points at times as the men's tennis team saw its second year come to an end with a 4-1 setback to third-seeded Wright State in the first round of the Horizon League Championships.
Due to weather, the Titans' consolation match against Green Bay scheduled for tomorrow was cancelled.
“We made some great strides here in our second season,” said head coach
Grant Asher. “We have a very talented freshman class and, if we can put another one together like this year, that will get us going in the right direction.”
The Titans dropped the doubles point, losing at one and three by a score of 9-7 and 8-4, respectively, before senior
Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) garnered the only victory with a 6-3, 6-3 tally over Nick Camilleri. The win was the 30th on the season for Necajevs as he ended his Titan career with a 55-8 mark at No. 1 singles, including a 14-0 record in league play, in his two years at Detroit.
UDM saw some tough matches not go its way as freshman
Cesar Escobar Serrano (Merliot, El Salvador/Educame) lost at No. 2, 6-1, 7-6 (6), while rookie
Chris Cheung (Mississauga, ON/Erindale Secondary) was downed 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4.
“We were real young at it showed at times today and throughout the year,” said Asher. “We just lacked experience at times playing in certain situations.”
The Titans ended the year at 8-12 and 2-5 in the conference, improving on their 5-13 and 1-6 record in 2008-09.
