Titans Turn in Victory over Dayton

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The men's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over the visiting Dayton Flyers at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, MI tonight after taking five-of-six points in singles and winning two out of three match-ups in doubles.

The Titans (1-4) started off the contest with a doubles victory as sophomores Cesar Escobar Serrano (Merliot, El Salvador/Education) and Chris Cheung (Mississauga, ON/Erindale) took an 8-0 decision over the Flyers (0-2).

Sophomores Pablo Nunez San Jose, Costa Rica/Educacion Abierta) and Alex Latosinsky (Sarnia, ON/St. Christopher's) locked up the point as they won their contest 8-5. Latosinsky clinched the win with an ace on the final point to give Detroit the doubles win.

In singles play, the Titans took five of six points from the Flyers. Nunez continued to play well as he took his match in straight sets winning 6-0, 6-0. Serrano won 6-2, 6-1, Cheung won 6-1, 6-3, Latosinsky won 6-0, 6-2 and junior Nick Tolomei (Rochester, MI/Adams) took a 6-2, 6-3 decision in the No. 1 singles position.

Tolomei became just the third Titan to earn a No. 1 singles victory since the rebirth of the Detroit men's tennis program three years ago. Pjotrs Necajevs held the No. 1 spot the past two seasons and put up a Titan career best 55 wins and Dustin Goldenberg recorded a win in the No. 1 spot on Feb. 21, 2009 against Saint Francis University (PA).

"The guys played well tonight. They came prepared right from the start and we held our leads and took the win," said head coach Grant Asher.

Detroit now looks ahead for the next match which will be a home match on Feb. 3 against Wayne State at the Franklin Athletic Club scheduled to start at 9:30 p.m.
