Titans Host Wayne State in Invitational Saturday

Final Results

DETROIT -- The men's tennis team hosted the first ever fall tournament Saturday as the Titan Invitational was held at the Titan Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Detroit Mercy. The Titans welcomed the Wayne State Warriors and won all but two matches on the day.

The schedule consisted of eight singles matches followed by four doubles and wrapped up with eight more singles match-ups.

"It was nice to have the event on our campus. It was a beautiful day, we had a great crowd out and the team came out the way I wanted us to play. We came out sharp and took seven of eight singles, three of four doubles, and finished with eight more singles wins," said Detroit men's tennis head coach Grant Asher.

In the opening singles round, the Titans walked away with victories in seven of the eight match-ups. David Streeter, Alex Latosinsky, Pablo Nunez, Cesar Escobar Serrano, Chris Cheung, Jay Joshi and David Stabley all recorded straight-set wins.

The doubles portion of the event featured four head-to-head match-ups with Detroit continuing its success tallying three more triumphs. Latosinsky and Nick Tolomei upended their opponent 8-2, Cheung and Serrano scored an 8-3 victory and Stabley and Joshi won 8-4.

Detroit would sweep the final eight singles matches as well as Latosinsky, Streeter, Nunez, Serrano, Joshi, Stabley and David Foreman and Larry Brown all came up with wins. Brown won his affair 6-4, 6-1 and after all the matches were complete, one match remained unsettled as the freshman Foreman and Warrior senior Matt Fisher were in a fight to the finish. The first set was won by Foreman, 7-6 (7-4 in the tiebreaker), and with all the other matches complete, everyone in attendance was at that court watching the last set. Foreman held on for the eventual 6-2 second-set win as the last point came on a ball that Fisher played just out of bounds giving Foreman the win.

"We have a lot to work on and the big thing for us is learning how to compete for every point day after day. Division I tennis is a long grueling season and the teams that are competing on an every-point basis are the ones that come out on top. We had a wide range of guys play today and we posted a few victories too so it was a successful day," added Asher.

The next action for Detroit will be at the ITA Midwest Regional scheduled for Oct. 13-15 in Columbus, OH.
