HARTLAND, Mich. -- Sophomore
Lindsey Lammers (Milan, MI/Milan) put together the best 18-hole score in Titan history with a 67 in the second round, and the red, white and blue set two team records en route to a victory at the Detroit Titans Fall Classic, held at the Hartland Glen Golf Course.
“Everyone played great and it was fun to see all the girls really step up and play well as we broke some records today,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “When Lindsey and Collette are playing well, that usually means we are playing well.”
Detroit's A squad recorded a 287 on Sunday to finish with a 590, five shots ahead of Oakland's A team. The 287 was a school record, 13 shots better than the 300 the Titans had in the first round of the 2010 Horizon League Championship. The two-round 590 also marked a new program best, 22 shots ahead of the 612 UDM posted in the 2008 Grand Valley State Invitational.
Lammers' six-under 67 provided for some extra golf as she forced a playoff for medalist honors with Oakland's Elizabeth Ecker. With both players posting a 140 for the tournament – a new career standard for Lammers as well as another school record - the playoff hole was at No. 1, where Ecker made par to win the title.
On the day, Lammers knocked in six birdies and an eagle and finished the weekend with a tournament-best 10 birdies. She was dominant on the par 5's tallying a seven-under 4.30 average and was second on the courses' par 4's with an even 4.00 mark. Her 67 gave her a one-shot edge over previous school record holder Rachel McHenry, who posted a 68 in the first round of the Grand Valley State Invitational in 2007.
Freshman
Olivia Richards (Waterford, Ontario/Simcoe Compostie) carded her second-straight one-under 72 to take third with a 144, a number that actually broke the school record and stands only behind Lammers' performance. She also put in an eagle on the final 18 and ended the 36-hole event with eight birdies and 20 pars. She played the par 4's to a two-over 4.11 average, the third best in the field, and was fourth on the par 5's with a five-under 4.50 score.
Junior
Collette Hansen (West Olive, MI/Grand Haven) shared seventh place with a personal-best five-over 151 (77, 74). The 74 on Sunday tied her career best, while her two-under 2.75 average on the par 3's led all tournament golfers.
Another career day was posted by junior
Allison Sears (Clio, MI/Powers) as she tied her season and career best with a 76 on the final 18 to earn 13th with a 155. Sears was able to collect a team-high 23 pars in the event.
Freshman
Jessica Mallender (Amherstburg, ON/General Amherst) and senior
Liz Zouzal (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) shared 14th with a 156. Mallender (79, 77) lowered her score from round one in her collegiate debut, while Zouzal's card (81, 75) included en eagle as she also set a new personal low for a round.
“To see a freshman in Olivia play great, and Liz, Danyelle (Kauble), Jessica and just all the girls turn in great rounds, that is what this team can do as we head into the spring,” added Ryan.
The Titans have one more event left on the fall slate as Detroit makes the short trip to Kettering, Ohio, to compete in the Dayton Invitational next week, Oct. 17-18.
