DETROIT -- The seven-time Horizon League champion Detroit men's golf team added another highly touted prospect to its program as head coach Mark Engel announced the signing of
Aaron Knutson (Lake Orion, MI/Notre Dame Prep) to a National Letter of Intent. Knutson will enroll as a freshman at UDM next fall.
"Aaron really made a name for himself in 2011, between winning the state high school championship and doing so well in summer tournaments,” said Engel. “He's really excited about being part of our program. Aaron should help our team a whole lot over the next four years."
“I chose Detroit because it will give me the best opportunity to continue my golf career,” Knutson told
GolfWeek. “It will also give me a very good education and a degree to help me succeed.”
Knutson is coming off a strong junior season as well as a great summer on the junior circuit. He was named to the All-State Super Team as a junior after winning the Division 3 State Championship as well as a district and regional title. In the state championship, he carded a four-under 140 (68-72), taking home medalist honors in dramatic fashion by sinking a 35-foot putt for birdie on the first playoff hole.
He was tabbed All-Catholic three times and All-Oakland County twice and also set the Notre Dame Prep record with a 73.0 tournament average. He led his squad to a Division 2 state championship in 2009 and a fourth-place finish in 2011.
Just this past summer, Knutson added to his resume by making the quarterfinals of the Michigan Junior Championship. He was fourth in the Michigan PGA Junior Tour Player of the Year Standings, and posted a top-10 effort at the 2011 Randy Wise Open, his first AJGA Tournament.
“He's still young as a tournament golfer, too, and I think he'll keep getting better and better with more experience,” added Engel.
