Men's Golf Aims For Low Scores At Horizon League Showdown

Head coach Jordan McArleton chats with David Swab.
DETROIT (4/22/2026) -- The long season has reached its highest peak as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team heads down south for this year's Horizon League Championships.

The three-day event will start with 18 holes on Saturday, April 25, continue on Sunday with round two, and conclude with the final 18 on Monday at the par 72, 6,868-yard El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida. The women's championship will also be held on the same course.

Fans can follow all the action with live results on Clippd. The men will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and Noon on Sunday and Monday.

Last year, the Titans were 10th, totaling a 930 (310-305-315) at the El Campeon course. Gowtham Nalluri led the group, carding a 230 (75-76-79) and tying for 26th.

UDM is averaging a 298.1 on the season, but has dropped that to a 295.4 in the four spring tournaments. Detroit Mercy had a season-best 867 (289-292-286) at Butler's Don Benbow Spring Invitational, tied for the ninth-best score in school history. The Titans were also runner-up at NKU's Jewell Invitational with an 871 (287-285-299), which included a season-low 285 in the second round.

Individually, seven golfers have averages under 79.0, led by graduate senior Bavake Sihota at 73.0. The former Michigan and Eastern Michigan golfer, who transferred to UDM after the first semester, has made an immediate impact in the spring, with six of his 11 rounds at par or better and two top-10 finishes. He claimed sixth at Butler with a collegiate-best 207 (69-70-68), the fourth-best 54-hole tournament score in Titan history, and shared third at NKU with a 214 (70-70-74).

Junior Mason Sokolowski has started all eight tournaments and is second on the team with a 74.9 mark. He has a pair of top-20 events, tying for 17th at the Xavier Invitational with a 221 (71-77-73), while battling for the lead and tying for fourth at NKU, firing a 215 (68-72-75).

Junior David Swab is third on the team with a 75.7 average, while redshirt sophomore Ethan Oblak is fourth at 75.9. Both have two rounds on the year at par or better, and Oblak is tallying a 74.7 average in the spring, with a pair of top-20 finishes.

Freshman Peyton Lawley has been one of the top freshmen in the league, playing in six tournaments with five starts and posting a 76.1 average, and Nalluri has two years of experience on the course and is sixth on the squad with a 76.2.

The Titans have tallied seven championships – third-most in Horizon League history - and finished third or better 12 times in the last 26 years, with six titles and four runner-up efforts in that span.

Detroit Mercy has had two individual champions, as Jason Hartman '01 posted the low score of 215 (74-73-68) in 1999 at Quail Hollow Resort in Concord, Ohio, and David Byrne '10 took the top spot with a 216 (74-67-75) in 2010 at Shaker Run Golf Course in Lebanon, Ohio.
