Titan Season Wraps Up at Youngstown State

FINAL MATCH RESULTS

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Sophomores Cesar Escobar Serrano (Merliot, El Salvador/Education) and Chris Cheung (Mississauga, ON/Erindale) each won at singles for Detroit as the Titans played in their final regular season contest at Youngstown State on Sunday.

The Titans (6-14, 1-5 Horizon League) fell by a 5-2 score to end the season one spot out of the playoffs. With the win, Youngstown State (6-12, 2-5 HL) clinched the final playoff spot in the Horizon League Tournament set to take place Apr. 21-23 in Indianapolis.

Serrano won a three-set match at No. 2 singles and Cheung played in the No. 5 position winning an opening set 6-2 and was up 2-0 in the second before his opponent retired giving Cheung the win.

In doubles, Detroit's No. 1 pair of sophomores Alex Latosinsky (Sarnia, ON/St. Christopher's) and Pablo Nunez (San Jose, Costa Rica/Educacion Abierta) downed Youngstown's top pair by an 8-1 score.

The Titans complete a season with no seniors on this year's roster. Detroit had a stretch of four wins in five matches from Jan. 28-Feb. 20 taking home wins over Dayton, IUPUI, IPFW, and Chicago State.

The doubles pairing of Cheung and Serrano this year registered a team-high nine wins including eight straight from Jan. 21 – Mar. 18. The streak included an 8-7 (8-6) win over No. 49 ranked Michigan State in Lansing on Feb. 26, and also a 9-7 conference win over Wright State Mar. 18.

Nunez ends the year with a team-best nine singles victories including four in the Horizon League. In doubles, he combined with Latosinsky for seven victories including three in the No. 1 position, three at No.2, and one at No. 3.

Latosinsky spent the year at No. 1 and No. 2 singles capturing three wins in each position. The sophomore had a stretch of three wins in five matches, all played at the No. 1 spot, over Valparaiso, Duquesne, and Green Bay from Mar. 26 – Apr. 9.
