DETROIT -- Men's tennis head coach Grant Asher has announced four additions to his team for the 2011-12 season. Asher will have two transfers and two freshmen join the squad in the fall.

David Streeter (Beverly Hills, MI/Birmingham Groves) headlines the newcomers as a transfer from Michigan. In addition, junior Mike Basha (Fort Gratiot, MI/Port Huron Northern) will also compete with the Titans in the fall after transferring from Western Michigan in January 2010. Asher will have two freshmen on campus in Jay Joshi (Rochester, MI/Rochester Adams) and David Foreman (Bloomfield Hills, MI/ Ernest W Seaholm).

Streeter joins Detroit after four years at Michigan where he earned a pair of varsity letters. He earned a bachelor's degree at U-M and will begin studies in the graduate MBA program at Detroit. Streeter was a five-star recruit coming out of Birmingham Groves High School as he compiled a 100-4 career singles record. He was a two-time team captain and a three-time state champion. He was named to the National High School All-America team twice and garnered All-State recognition all four years. He was also the recipient of the 2007 U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete award which looks to recognize high school juniors and seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in varsity or intramural sports while maintaining a high average.

“I am thrilled to get a guy like David on our team. He is a three-time state champion and a local kid. We always try to build our program around the best local talent and he is as good as they get from this area. He will bring experience from U of M to our relatively new program and that will be a huge impact for us. He was a five-star recruit out of high school and his winning experience will be a great addition to our team,” stated Asher.

Basha transferred to Detroit before this year's dual-match season started, but had to sit to fulfill transfer requirements. He came to Detroit after spending two years at Western Michigan totaling a 20-11 singles record and a 31-23 mark in overall play. He was a three-star prospect and the No. 4 ranked senior in Michigan by TennisRecruiting.net out of Port Huron Northern High School in 2008. With a 32-6 record his senior year, he was a finalist for the prestigious “Mr. Tennis” award given to a top Number One Senior Singles player in Michigan by the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association in addition to being named to the Division 1 All-State first team. Basha advanced to the Division 1 state finals at No. 1 in each of his final three years making the semifinals as a senior, the quarterfinals as a junior, and the round of 16 as a sophomore. He was also named the Port Huron Times Herald Player of the Year three times.

“Mike almost came [to UDM] with Alex Latosinsky. He was close, and Western Michigan came in and he fell for the allure of a little bigger and established program at the time, but I think that says something about our program that he is coming on board now,” commented Asher.

“We'll get him for two years of competition and I think he is going to push us a step further not only towards a championship, but just the character of our program which is really important. His desire to win and improve his game is second to none and he is a fiesty competitor and a leader that will bring a wealth of experience to the current group."

Joshi comes from Rochester Adams High School after playing three years of varsity tennis and will enter UDM's computer science program. Joshi captained the Highlanders to an Oakland Activities Association (OAA) Red championship this past season, finishing 17-6 overall. He was named All-State as a junior and senior as he helped the Highlanders win both the regionals and quarterfinals at the state tournament. In his freshman year, he was part of a team that placed second at the state championship. In addition to tennis, he was a member of the Spanish Honors Society and Business Professionals of America.

“Jay in my opinion is a hidden gem. He is 6'5” and can serve at 120 mph. He loves the net, and has a great balance between power and finesse. He is also a local kid and for these local guys to make a commitment to Detroit says we're moving this program in the right direction,” said Asher.

Foreman played four years of tennis at Ernest W. Seaholm High School. He helped the Maple Leafs to two Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) runner-up efforts in 2008 and 2009.  In his junior season, he played in the No. 1 singles positions and captured All-State honors. During his senior campaign in 2010, he was named a team captain. In high school, he was the Deputy Sports Editor for the school newspaper and also helped out on the yearbook.

“Foreman is another local kid who was a captain at Seaholm and an All-State player. He is a hard worker who will add to our program by pushing our team to be more competitive. I'm excited to bring him in and the depth he is going to add to our program," added Asher.

This past season, Detroit finished seventh in the Horizon League with a 6-14 dual-match record including a 1-6 mark in the conference.
