DETROIT -- The future of the Titans continues to look bright as both returning members of the team and incoming freshmen have posted some great scores and finishes on the links in the last few weeks.
None have been better then incoming freshman
Lucas Kim (Toronto, ON/Silverthorn), who claimed his second victory of the summer by winning the Ontario Junior Boys' Championship at Bay of Quinte Golf and Country Club in Belleville, ON.
Kim was among the leaders from the very start opening with back-to-back 69's to sit six-under through the first two rounds. He then took his game to another level shooting a five-under 67 in the third round to move into first, a place that he would never relinquish raising the trophy with an 11-under 277 (69, 69, 67, 72). The 11-under was three strokes better than the runner-up as well as just one off the tournament record.
With the strong pipeline of Canadian recruits to Detroit in the championship history of Titan golf, Lucas became the first player in school history to ever win the event. Past winners of the tournament have included 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir (1988) and Matt Hill (2007), the 2009 NCAA individual medalist and Jack Nicklaus Award winner.
Also playing well in that event was another incoming rookie in
Michael Nedoszytko (Scarborough, ON/McNeil), who carded an even-par 288 (70, 74, 72, 72) to tie for fifth.
That same duo also played in the Ontario Junior Match Play Championship, held at Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo, ON. Both Kim and Nedoszytko breezed through the first three rounds before being edged in the quarterfinals by 1-up scores.
At the Ontario Men's Amateur Championship at the Brampton Golf Club in Brampton, ON, five Titans hit the course with four placing in the top 30. That group was led by Kim's share of 13th place after carding a 294 (74, 71, 73, 76). 2011 graduate
Britt Pronk (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas) and freshman
Brendan Leonard (Cambridge, ON/St. Benedict) tied for 24th with a 297, while sophomore
Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON/Holy Cross) totaled a 298 to tie for 28th.
There is still one more month to go in the summer session and on the docket for members of the team include playing in the Canadian Junior Championship, Ontario Provincial Championship and the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship.
