DETROIT -- The Titans hosted the UDM Invitational Sunday on Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall. Teams from Xavier, Oakland, Wayne State, Michigan, Michigan State and the men's team from Northwestern were all in the Motor City for the annual competition.
 
It was the women's foil and the men's epee teams that led Detroit on the day as each finished with 28 wins. On the men's epee squad, sophomore Yaroslav Ivanov turned in a team-best 13 wins over five losses, while Cole Goike went an even 9-9. On the women's side, sophomore Shannon Canavan had the second-best Titan total on the day with an 11-4 record and fellow sophomore Sarah Armitage went 9-6.
 
Detroit started the day strong sweeping a pair of wins on the men's and women's side over Xavier in front of the home crowd. In the second round, the women also defeated Oakland, 17-10, in a head-to-head match.
 
Against Xavier, the Titan men scored a 15-12 win and the women a 23-4 victory. On the men's side, the foil squad won 7-2 and epee squad was 6-3 with some masterful victories. The foil team was led by sophomore's Kyle Cisco and Elijah Robertson, who both scored 3-0 victories. Freshman Phil Nelson also posted a win in foil for the first of his dual-match collegiate career.  

In epee, Goike went 2-1 and Ivanov, who fenced with the epee weapon instead of his regular foil, was 3-0 against the Musketeers. In sabre, freshmen John Faski and Frank Adamini added one win apiece to the total.
 
The women displayed a dominating performance in their match with Xavier as the sabre squad was a perfect 9-0. Freshman Katie Lang and sophomores Ariel Skellett and Eva Berndt all captured three wins each. In foil, Canavan and Armitage both posted 3-0 scores and freshman Jill Johnson went 2-1. Finally in epee, sophomore Paige Zmudczynski and freshman Mary Colombo both went 3-0 in the complete team victory.
 
The men's team would fall in a close one-point 14-13 decision in the second round against Oakland as the epee squad recorded a 7-2 tally and Goike scored a 3-0 victory. The women managed a second-straight defeat as the foil squad led the way with an 8-1 mark and the sabre squad was right behind with a 7-2 total.
 
The women would post 25 wins over the next three match-ups against Wayne State, Michigan State and Michigan, including a close 16-11 setback to Michigan in the last bout of the day. Johnson finished 6-6 overall in foil and also fenced the last bout with the epee and came out with a 2-1 record. Sophomore Eva Berndt finished with a 9-6 total and Zmudczynski also finished with a winning record at 8-7. Berndt's fellow sabreists, Skellett and Lang, ended up with identical 7-8 records after the team's opening competition of 2012.
 
The men, featuring three freshmen, finished with 15 wins over its next four match-ups against Wayne State, Michigan State, Michigan and Northwestern. Goike and Robertson both had 9-9 records on the day.
 
After this weekend, the Titans will hit the road for a pair of competitions in New York. On Jan. 21, they will compete in the West Point Duals in West Point and then will be part of the Vassar Quads in Poughkeepsie on Jan. 22.
 
Notes: Senior Michael Purdy-Sachs was not at the event due to a competition at the North American Cup in Portland, OR.
