URBANA, Ill. -- The men's tennis team faced a tall order Friday afternoon as they matched up on the road against the No. 17 ranked team in the country. The contest would go in favor of the home team as the Fighting Illini won by a 4-0 score.
Detroit (0-3) first saw its No. 3 doubles pairing of
Chris Cheung and
Cesar Escobar Serrano fall 8-1 and then the Titan No. 2 combination of
Alex Latosinsky and
Mike Basha were on the losing end of an 8-4 decision as the doubles point went to Illinois (1-0).
In singles play,
Nick Tolomei faced the No. 24 ranked singles player in Roy Kalmanovich. Kalmanovich showed his strength in a straight set victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win. At No. 6 singles, Serrano also fell in straight sets and the fourth and clinching Illinois point came at No. 3 singles as
Mike Basha fell in a third straight set defeat.
Detroit will open the home portion of its dual-match schedule on Saturday as part of homecoming weekend at UDM as the Duquesne Dukes will come to the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield for a match at 5:00 p.m.
