Tennis to Host EMU and Xavier

DETROIT -- The Titan tennis programs will both be in action this weekend as the women's team will first play a match against Eastern Michigan set for Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, the men's and women's teams will take part in the first doubleheader of the season as the men will host Xavier at 7:00 p.m. and the women will face the Musketeers at 8:00 p.m.

All matches will be played at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, the home indoor court of the Titans.

The women are coming off their first match of the season Sunday evening as they hosted Western Michigan. A 7-0 victory for the Broncos left the Titans with their first and only loss on the young season.

Eastern Michigan enters the match with a 2-2 record on the year after splitting a pair of home and road contests. The Eagles opened the year with a 5-2 loss to Marshall and followed that with a 7-0 sweep over Oakland. After that, they hit the road and won a 7-0 decision over Green Bay of the Horizon League and then finished the Wisconsin trip with a match against the Badgers of Wisconsin with the home team scoring a 6-1 win.

The Eagles feature the No. 57 ranked doubles tandem in the country in Nino Mebuke and Miriam Westerink.

On Saturday, the Titan women will play the back end of a doubleheader scheduled with the men's team.

Prior to the Xavier match-ups, the men's and women's teams of Xavier will play at Toledo Friday afternoon. Entering the Toledo contest, Xavier's women's team has played one dual-match falling 7-0 to Miami (OH). Junior Katie Pleiman led Xavier last year with a 22-7 overall record and a 16-4 mark in the dual match season.

On Saturday, the Detroit men will begin play at 7:00 p.m. with a match against Xavier. The Musketeers have had a pair of 7-0 losses this year but they have both come on the road against ranked teams playing at No. 3 Ohio State and No. 30 Louisville.

The Musketeers were picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll this year after capturing conference titles in three of the last four years. Sophomore Jimmy Roebker was named the A-10's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer last year while also being named to the All-Conference first team.

The Titan men are riding a two-match win streak after capturing weekend wins over Duquesne and IPFW to improve to 2-3 overall.

On Saturday, Detroit hosted Duquesne and managed a 4-3 victory. Sunday was followed with another win over IPFW as the Titans won 5-2 after dropping the doubles point and going on to win five of six singles match-ups.

After this weekend, the Detroit men are scheduled to take on local rival Wayne State Thursday in a home match in Southfield set for 9:00 p.m. The next action for the women will come on Friday as the Titans will be at Ball State for a 6:00 p.m. match.
