Detroit to Play Three-in-Three Days

Wayne State, Toledo and Michigan State on Deck for Men's Tennis Over Three Straight Days

DETROIT -- The Titans will compete in three matches over the course of the next three days starting Thursday night at the Franklin Athletic Club. Detroit will start by hosting local rival Wayne State at 8:30 p.m. before road contests at Toledo Friday at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday at No. 53 Michigan State at 10:00 a.m.

The Titans are 2-4 on the young dual-match season and are coming off a 6-1 loss to Xavier on Saturday. Prior to that match-up, Detroit was on a two-match win streak after a pair of wins over Duquesne and IPFW.

In the season home opener, Detroit posted a 4-3 win over Duquesne as Mike Basha secured the win with a victory in the No. 4 singles position. Over IPFW, the Titans fell in the doubles portion of the match but came back to win in singles capturing five of six match-ups for the 5-2 defeat.

In 2010-11, Basha leads the team with seven overall singles victories while Cesar Escobar Serrano has six and a pair of Titans, Alex Latosinsky and Nick Tolomei, own a share of the next highest mark with five wins.

In doubles, Chris Cheung and Jay Joshi have played together as the No. 3 pairing in each of the last three matches. The duo has picked up victories in two of those contests including an 8-0 sweep over Duquesne.

The first match-up of the weekend will feature a rematch of the Detroit Titan Invitational held in the fall at the Titan Tennis Complex, on the UDM campus, on Oct. 8. In 16 singles and four doubles matches, Detroit won all but one singles and one doubles match-up.

Wayne State comes in with its team on the latest ITA Division II regional rankings as the No. 6 team in the Midwest Region behind Drury, Rockhurst, Southern Indiana, Northwood and Northern Kentucky following fall competition. Individually, junior Thomas Ducret is ranked seventh in singles. Sophomore Aman Gill is 18th in singles and seventh in doubles with Melvin Joseph. This will be the first dual-match of the season for the Warriors.

Detroit will move on to Toledo Friday afternoon as the Rockets are 4-5 in dual-match play.

The last match for Toledo came on Sunday as they were upended by the No. 3 ranked team, Ohio State, by a 4-0 score. The Rockets had two straight home wins before that over recent Detroit opponents with a 5-2 victory over Duquesne and a 6-1 defeat over Xavier. Four of the Toledo losses have come to ranked teams as #28 Notre Dame, #29 Indiana, #66 DePaul and Ohio State have all grounded the Rockets. The other team loss came in a neutral match against Illinois State in which the Redbirds won 5-2.

Saturday's match-up will not get any easier as the Titans will face the No. 53 ranked Michigan State squad. The Spartans are 4-4 thus far with all of their losses coming to top 30 teams. A home loss to #14 Mississippi State was followed by a neutral match loss against #7 Kentucky. Michigan State then played a pair of matches in Tennessee as part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend falling to #24 Tennessee and #15 Oklahoma.

The next match for the Titans will come on Sat. Feb. 11 with a contest at Ball State set for 1:00 p.m.
