Ball State and Dayton Next Competition for Titans

DETROIT -- The men's tennis team will play two matches on a road trip that will see them take on Ball State Saturday and Dayton on Sunday. Saturday's contest in Muncie, IN is slated for 1:00 p.m. and Sunday's affair in Dayton, OH will start at noon.
 
Detroit (3-6) is coming off a match Saturday against the #53 ranked Michigan State Spartans. In a 6-1 defeat to Michigan State, Cesar Escobar Serrano (Merliot, El Salvador/Education) won at No. 5 singles 4-6, 6-4 (10-7) as he captured the lone point for the Titans. The win marked the fifth straight singles victory for Serrano and he currently leads the team with a 5-3 mark on the dual-match season. It was also the 36th singles win of his Titan career.
 
Last weekend, Detroit had three matches in three days and started off with a Thursday evening home contest against Wayne State. The Titans posted a 6-1 victory over their local rivals scoring wins in two of three doubles matches and five of six singles match-ups. The third contest of last weekend came Saturday as Detroit fell 6-1 at Toledo.
 
Ball State is on a three-match win streak after defeating non-conference opponent Xavier last Saturday in Cincinnati by a score of 5-2 improving its overall spring record to 3-2 on the season. Head Coach Bill Richards is 12-wins shy of reaching 600 overall career victories, he currently has a career 588 wins. The Cardinals are the defending MAC Tournament Champions and were the preseason favorite to repeat. 
 
Dayton is 2-2 overall with a 5-2 win over Eastern Illinois and a 4-3 win IPFW. Both were home victories and sandwiched around a 6-1 loss at Eastern Kentucky and a 4-3 home defeat to Valparaiso. Last season, the Flyers finished 2-13 overall.
 
The next scheduled match for the Titans after this weekend will be in Nashville, TN as Detroit will take on Lipscomb at 10:00 a.m. on March 3.
