Coach Dressell Video Review
CLEVELAND -- 10 Titan fencers competed in the NCAA Midwest Fencing Regionals Championships in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this past weekend at Cleveland State. Senior
Michael Purdy-Sachs (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern & Ind. Studies) of men's foil finished in eighth place while sophomore
Yaroslav Ivanov (Louisville, KY/Ballard) came in 10th in men's epee.
The men's high finisher was Purdy-Sachs of men's foil who placed 8th with nine wins over seven losses but was looking for a better result in order to help his case for the NCAA Championship. With 60% of consideration, the other 40% is based on varsity bouts during the season, for selection to the NCAA Championship based on NCAA Regional results and a tough field of men's foil fencers, the senior will have a difficult time achieving the same goal as last season when he placed 20th in the country at the NCAA Championship in foil.
In women's sabre, freshman
Katie Lang (Rochester Hills, MI/Divine Child) led the charge as all three Titans finished right in a row. Lang was 13th after earning three victories in pool play. Sophomore
Eva Berndt (Fremont, MI/Providence Christian) was 14th and also had three wins in round robin competition while
Ariel Skellett (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic), who continued to fight a nagging shoulder issue, placed 15th.
Other Titan results on the women's side saw
Paige Zmudczynski (Fraser, MI/Dakota) finish 14th in women's epee while
Sarah Armitage (Canton, MI/Plymouth) placed 18th in women's foil and
Shannon Canavan (Lake Orion, MI/Lake Orion) finished 20th as all three were in their first NCAA Tournament bouts.
In all, eight Titans were newcomers to the first round of the NCAA.
Other Titan results on the men's side included Ivanov placing 10th overall and recording eight wins in 17 bouts. First timers
Clint Mikek (St. Louis, MI/St. Louis) from men's epee placed 18th and
Elijah Robertson (Plymouth, MI/Salem) of men's foil finished 17th.
The NCAA fencing committee will now determine its final selections for the NCAA Championship set for Columbus, OH as Ohio State will host event from March 21-25.
