SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Detroit Titans (5-11, 0-2 Horizon League) faced its second straight Horizon League opponent in as many days as the men's tennis team hosted Youngstown State (6-6, 1-0 HL) on Saturday evening at the Franklin Athletic Club. For the second straight night, the Titans fell by the same 4-3 score as Friday night, Detroit opened the conference slate against Cleveland State.
Saturday's match-up started out with a pair of doubles wins for the home team with the night ending with the same result. The Titans would post victories in just two of six singles matches.
Pablo Nunez and
Jay Joshi would start things off with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles that would be followed by another Detroit win from
Alex Latosinsky and
David Stabley in the No. 2 spot by the same 8-3 score. A late tiebreaker nearly gave the Titans the doubles sweep as the No. 1 duo of
Mike Basha and
Chris Cheung fell 9-8 (8) in a close match.
The Penguins would put up a fight the entire night as the Detroit wins still required third set tiebreakers to secure those matches. Latosinsky and
Cesar Escobar Serrano were the final two singles matches of the night with Latosinsky posting scores of 6-1, 5-7, 10-8 at No. 2 singles while Serrano closed the competition winning 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 in the No. 3 singles position.
Serrano now has won six straight singles matches and 11 of his last 12. The 11 dual-match wins ties his career season-best that he set as a freshman two years ago.
The men will now look ahead to their next match on March 31 as they continue Horizon League action at Butler at 10:00 a.m.
