Interview With Hansen
REDFORD, Mich.—She has been close all spring long, but junior
Collette Hansen (West Olive, MI/Grand Haven) finally has first collegiate victory as the Titan captured medalist honors at the Detroit Titans Invitational. The event was played on the Par 72, 5,946-yard Western Golf & Country Club in Redford.
Hansen carded her second-straight 80 to finish one stroke ahead of a pair of Oakland golfers. She entered the day behind by two strokes, but was able to make it and add the winning shot. In the tournament, she had three birdies and a team-best 16 pars, while finishing second in Par 4 scoring (4.63) and third on the Par 3's (3.17).
“Collette has been playing fantastic,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “Today, she was just real consistent and even battled the weather to earn the win.”
The victory comes after taking third at the Sunshine Spring Classic, second at the Benbow Invitational and sixth at the IPFW Spring Classic.
Three other Titans were in the top seven led by junior
Allison Sears (Clio, MI/Powers), who tied for fourth with a 166 (80, 86) and led the field with five birdies. Sophomore
Christina Thorne (Kingston, ON/Bayridge) and senior
Liz Zouzal (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) shared sixth place with a 168. Thorne followed her 84 in round one with another on Tuesday, while Zouzal took eight strokes off her first round score to shoot an 80 on the final 18.
Junior
Danyelle Kauble (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central) took 10th with a 171 (86, 85), while freshman
Olivia Richards (Waterford, Ontario/Simcoe Compostie) carded a 173 (86, 87) for 11th.
As a team, Detroit totaled a 665 (336, 329) and shaved seven shots off its round one score. Oakland won the event with a 661, while UIC was third posting a 703. UDM tallied nine birdies in the two days and 73 pars, while topping their counterparts on the course's Par 4's with a 4.77 average.
“We have one tournament left and we still have some decisions to make on the Horizon League Championship,” said Ryan. “Today was just another day that showed how deep we are and how everyone can play well in different elements and still succeed.”
The red, white and blue return to action this weekend, April 14-15, when the Titans make the short trip to Bowling Green, Ohio, to participate in the Falcon Invitational. The 36-hole tournament will have one round on each day, with shotgun starts beginning at 9:00 a.m., on both days.
