Playoff Run Ends as Cleveland State Downs Titans

Match Results

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Detroit Titans saw their 2012 playoff run come to a close as the women's tennis squad fell by a 4-0 score to Cleveland State in the Horizon League Semifinals at the Butler Bubble Saturday morning in Indianapolis.

A day after setting back the No. 3 seed Milwaukee, the sixth-seeded Titans (7-13, 3-5 Horizon League) were unable to advance in the tournament against the No. 2 seed from Cleveland State.

"Our season did not start well and having five girls for most of the year, I thought we overachieved and finished strong," said head coach Pjotrs Necajevs. "I'm proud of the girls and the effort they continued to show fighting until the end. Yesterday was a big win for us and we will use today to help our returners next season."

Making an appearance in the conference semifinals for the sixth-straight season, Detroit could not come back two days in a row as the Vikings came out with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles and then three singles victories at No. 1, 2 and 4 to put the match out of reach.

The third place match will not be played due to an unfavorable weather forecast Sunday therefore bringing the careers of seniors Amanda Cornwell and Alyssa Korson to an end. Cornwell finished her career with 38 career singles wins and added 39 in doubles playing three years with the Titans while Korson joined Detroit for the stretch run this past season.

The Horizon League Women's Championship will feature the top teams in the regular season as the No. 2 seed Cleveland State will face the No. 1 seed and defending champion UIC Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (EST). That match will be streamed live online on the Horizon League Network.
