MILWAUKEE (9/16/12) -- It was a great first weekend of women's fall tennis for the University of Detroit Mercy as freshman
Nino Sujashvili won the singles championship and
Elena Strakhova and Valeryia Kulikouskaya were runners-up in doubles competition at the Milwaukee Classic, hosted by Marquette.
"We had an amazing weekend," said head coach Pjotrs Necajevs. "We had a great opportunity to test ourselves against established programs and we proved ourselves."
DAY ONE:
Detroit swept Western Michigan in doubles to begin the weekend. Strakhova and Kulikouskaya won at No. 1, 8-4. Sujashvili and
Julia Fernandes won by an 8-5 score, while
Raina Halabi and
Chloe Karoub took the final match 8-4.
In singles against Marquette, Sujashvili cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 decision and Kulikouskaya earned a 6-3, 6-4 triumph.
DAY TWO:
The Titans dropped a doubles match to Xavier with the lone win by Karoub and Halabi, 8-6.
In singles against WMU, Sujashvili posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 2, and Strakhova won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 6, with WMU taking the other four matches.
DAY THREE:
UDM blanked Marquette in doubles with Strakhova and Kulikovskaya winning 8-4 at No. 1. At No. 2 doubles, Sujashvili and Fernandes claimed a 9-7 victory, while Karoub and Halabi also earned a tiebreaking 9-7 affair.
To wrap-up the fall tournament, Detroit took four of the six singles matches against Xavier. Sujashvili edged her opponent 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7) in a tiebreak at first singles, and Kulikoukaya won in straight sets in dominating fashion 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. Fernandes tallied a 6-3, 1-6, (10-8) win at No. 4 and Strakhova cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 5.
The Titans will continue fall play when they travel to Ohio for the Wright State Invitational on September 28th.
