ORLANDO, Fla. (3/11/13) -- Make it six out of seven team titles on the year as junior
Christina Thorne was the medalist and the Titans dominated the field winning by 38 strokes at the 3rd Annual Sunshine Spring Classic, held at the Par 72, 6008-yard Rio Pinar Country Club.
Detroit – which had five players finish in the top seven - co-hosted the event with Seminole State College (FL), and after tallying a 299 in round one, UDM totaled a 311 on Monday for a 610 card. Detroit outgunned Florida Atlantic (648), Seminole (652), Chicago State (659) and UIC (675) in the two-day tournament.
“Like I said yesterday, the expectations of this team is very high,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “From the classroom, to the strength room and out on the course, they have the expectation that they are winning.”
The 610 score was the fifth best 36-hole tournament tally in Titan history as Detroit posted its fourth straight win and the sixth out of seven events this year. It is also the 15th title in school history and the ninth since the spring of 2011.
Thorne earned her first collegiate victory in impressive style as she shot a 1-over 73 – tying for the best round in the event - on the final 18 to win by four strokes with a 150 (77-73). Thorne led the field with 25 pars and in par 3 scoring (-2, 2.75), while also sinking three birdies.
It was Thorne's eighth career top-10 finish, which included runner-up on four occasions, and has been top 10 in six of UDM's seven events on the year.
“Tina was once again in the 70's and she just had a tremendous week down here,” said Coach Ryan. “She fell in a playoff to Lindsey (Lammers) and lost by one to Olivia (Richards) in the first two events down here and this time, she played great to get the win.”
Junior
Lindsey Lammers tied for second with a 154 (74-80), her 12th career top-10 effort. She topped the competition on the par 5's with a 1-under 4.88 average and collected 21 pars and three birdies.
Senior
Collette Hansen had an 82 to take fourth with a 155 (73-82) and fellow senior
Allison Sears placed fifth overall carding a 156 (75-81). Hansen led the field in par 4 scoring (+4, 4.20) and tied for the tournament high with five birdies, while Sears recorded her sixth career top-10 mark.
Sophomore
Olivia Richards shaved five shots off her first round score and posted a 77 to share seventh with a 159 (82-77). Richards – who won the Titan Tri-Match last Friday by one stroke over Thorne – had five birdies and 15 pars.
The Titans will fly back from Florida and get a few more weeks of practice in before competing in the IPFW Spring Classic at Pine Valley Country Club in Fort Wayne, Ind., from Mar. 31-Apr. 1.
