DETROIT (3/21/13) –The Detroit women's tennis team will travel to Ohio for doubleheaders against Youngstown State on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and Cleveland State on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
The Titans
Detroit has won five straight matches after starting out with three losses. UDM is coming off a weekend when it battled for a 4-3 win over Duquesne on Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa. and then downed former HL opponent Butler, 6-1, the following day in Southfield, Mich.
After her performance over the weekend,
Chloe Karoub was named the Horizon League Player of the Week. She went a perfect 2-0 in singles matches to extend her winning streak to five matches.
Irina Slizovskaya has also found her groove, winning three straight singles matches at fourth singles after winning one match at both first and third singles. Valery Kulikovskaya and
Elena Strakhova both have recorded five wins on the season.
In doubles action, Karoub has teamed with Kulikovskaya for a perfect 5-0 record at second and third doubles and
Julia Fernandes and
Elena Strakhova have earned three wins at first doubles. Slizovskaya has won six-straight doubles matches, teaming up with
Raina Halabi,
Nino Sujashvili and Karoub.
The Penguins
Youngstown State improved to 8-7 in the dual-match season after a 7-1 victory over Oakland on Thursday, taking all but one singles match.
Paula de Man is dominating first singles with a 13-1 record. She has won six-straight matches, with her only loss coming to #64 ranked Kelsey Dieters from Ohio State. Sophomore Marta Burak is 11-2 and has won her previous five matches.
Burak has played with Margarita Sadovnikova for seven wins at first doubles while Annina Brendel and Carolyn Jesko have a pair of wins at second and third doubles.
The Vikings
CSU is 6-7 coming into this weekend and will play at Akron on Saturday before hosting UDM on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Last time out, Cleveland fell 7-0 to Stetson on March 12.
Kara Sherwood leads the Vikings with a 6-2 record at fourth singles and Nicole Janek and Maria Lazaris have both earned five singles victories on the season.
In doubles play, Alexandra Bush and Sherwood have worked together for four wins at the first spot but have dropped their previous two matches. Ellen Folkers and Mathilde Orange have won five matches, including their last match against Duquesne on March 3.
On the Horizon
Detroit will continue Horizon League play when it hosts Wright State on March 30 at 12:00 p.m. at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
