LAKE MARY, Fla. (3/6/2013) -- It was a roommate battle out on the links and junior
Lindsey Lammers' birdie on the second playoff hole lifted her to medalist honors over junior
Christina Thorne giving the Titans an individual and a team win at the Magnolia Spring Break Classic, held at the Par 72, 6083-yard Magnolia Plantation Golf Club.
The victory was the fourth for the Titans in five events on the year and their 13th in school history.
“It was a lot of fun to watch them go out and play each other since they are roommates and great friends,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “I think the whole team loved seeing them play for the win.”
The Titans finished what they started in round one with a 320 on Wednesday to post a 632 (312-320) total and a nine-shot win over co-host Seminole State College (641). Florida Atlantic came in third at 657 (329-328), Jackson State fourth with a 678 (334-344) and Saint Francis (Pa.) claimed fifth posting a 682 (344-338).
“It was a great team win for us,” said Coach Ryan. “The conditions weren't great with it being cold and windy, but they all played well as a team.”
Lammers opened with a 1-over 73 yesterday and tallied a 79 today for a 152 total and that looked to be good enough through 36, but Thorne was able to grind out a 78 on the final 18 to force a tie, sending the pair of Titans into a playoff. After both birdied the first hole – a par 5 – they came to the second hole and had good drives and got on the green in two. Lammers then sank her 10-foot putt for a birdie leaving it to Thorne to push it to a third playoff, but she was not able to drain her putt.
For Lammers, it was her second win of the year and the fifth of her career, while Thorne recorded her sixth top-10 finish and third runner-up effort. Lammers led the field with six birdies as well as a 4-over 4.20 average on the course's par 4's. Thorne had a team-best 23 pars and tallied three birdies, while finishing in the top 3 in scoring average on the par 3's (+2, 3.25), par 4's (+6, 4.30) and par 5's (E, 5.00).
Senior
Collette Hansen tied for seventh place with a 161 (79-82), while senior
Allison Sears had a five-stroke improvement from round one to share 14th with a 167 (86-81). Sears knocked in five birdies in the two rounds and Hansen had three with 20 pars.
Individually, sophomore
Jessica Mallender recorded an 85 on the day for a 169 (84-85) scorecard, taking 17th overall, while knocking in 18 pars, fourth most on Detroit.
