LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (4/13/2013) --
The Detroit men's lacrosse team was able to stop Siena early, but a second-half run by the Saints was too much to handle as the Titans fell at Siena, 13-10, on Saturday.

Junior Alex Maini and sophomore Scott Drummond each tallied a hat trick with three goals and added an assist for a team-high four points. Sophomore Mike Birney had two goals while junior Tom Masterson handed out a career-best three assists.

Detroit (2-8, 2-3 MAAC) led 9-6 with 3:31 left in the third when Siena (5-7, 3-1 MAAC) scored six-straight goals to jump out in front, 12-9, with 4:10 left. Birney was able to get UDM within 12-10 as Masterson had his career-high third assist, but Siena was able to close out the game for the 13-10 win.

Siena jumped on the board first with a pair of goals in nine seconds, but Detroit came right back with four-straight markers. Drummond started the scoring with the first of his two opening period goals as junior Maini found him open on the left side. Just a minute later, UDM knotted it at 2-2 as Masterson set up Maini for a goal at the 10:10 mark.

Detroit then took a 4-2 lead as Drummond fired in his second and in transition, senior Jordan Houtby passed it to Birney, who did the rest for a two-goal lead.

The red, white, and blue continued its offensive flow in the second as Drummond recorded his hat trick early in the period and then freshman Nick Melucci grabbed a pass from Masterson and in one motion, caught it high and came down low, shooting a grounder that beat the Saints' goalie for a 6-3 advantage midway through the half and a 6-4 lead at the break.

Siena pulled within 6-5 in the third, but Detroit came back with two-straight unassisted goals as senior Chris Nemes was able to tally one. Maini then notched his second for an 8-5 lead and his hat trick third goal off a pass from Drummond for a 9-6 advantage with 3:31 left in the period.

That is when the Saints took over with six-straight goals.

Redshirt freshman Damien Hicks was 11-of-27 in faceoffs, but started the game 0-of-7 before coming back to win seven of the next 10, while leading the team with six ground balls. Houtby and Jamie Hebden each had a pair of caused turnovers, with Houtby recording four ground balls and adding an assist.

Senior A.J. Levell made nine saves in net, including some great ones early on, and senior John Dwyer had three ground balls.

Detroit was outshot, 36-29, with the Saints coming alive with 14 third-period shots and a 23-14 advantage in the second half. UDM was 16-of-19 on clears and held Siena to 1-of-4 on the extra-man attack.

The Titans will now play two non-conference road games next week starting with Michigan on Wednesday, Apr. 17, under the lights at Michigan Stadium at 7:00 p.m. and then at Marquette on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
