INDIANAPOLIS (4/26/13) – The fourth-seeded Detroit women's tennis team opened the first round of the Horizon League Championships with a 4-2 win against #5 Milwaukee on Friday in Indianapolis.
"As a whole we fought hard today," said head coach Pjotrs Necajevs. "We were disciplined and we stuck to the game plan. I am proud of the girls and it is a great win for us but we have another match ahead of us."
The Panthers took second doubles, 8-2, but
Raina Halabi and
Chloe Karoub took third doubles, 8-3. The pair of
Elena Strakhova and Valery Kulikovskaya battled to a 9-8 (3) victory at first doubles to clinch the doubles point for the Titans.
Chloe Karoub took was victorious at first singles, 6-4, 6-4, and
Raina Halabi took her match at sixth singles in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Milwaukee took third and fifth singles, but
Nino Sujashvili clinched the win in a hard-fought match at second singles, 7-6 (3), 7-5.
Detroit will face #1 UIC in the semifinal round on Saturday at the West Indy Racquet Club. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
