NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (4/9/2013) -- The mantle where all the trophies sit just got a bit smaller as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team won its seventh event of the season and the fourth of the spring campaign with a first-place finish at the Purple Eagles Invitational on Tuesday.
“We didn't play great again today, but I give the team credit for fighting out there for every shot,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “We need to work on some things for the championship, but I was happy that we stayed and fought through these tough rounds.”
UDM posted a 309 on the final 18 holes – the best round by a team in the event – and won by six shots over Horizon League-rival Youngstown State, who the Titans were tied with after round one. The Titans finished with a 630 (321-309) ahead of YSU (636), St. Francis (Pa.) (661), Robert Morris (666) and host Niagara (689).
All five Titan golfers were in the top 10 as the team effort helped Detroit surge to the front. Juniors
Lindsey Lammers and
Christina Thorne led the way tying for third with a 155.
Thorne carded the best round for the Titans in the two days with a 2-over 74 on Tuesday and topped the competition with 23 pars. Lammers recovered from her opening-round 80 to shoot a 75 on the final 18, while knocking in 22 pars and playing the par 5's to an even 5.00 average.
Senior
Collette Hansen placed sixth with a 160 (78-82) which included tying for the tournament lead with four birdies, while senior
Allison Sears and sophomore
Olivia Richards tallied a 162 to share ninth place. Richards and Sears also both had 17 pars apiece and Richards tied for the second best mark on the course's Par 3's with a +2, 3.20 average.
The win was the seventh on the year for the Titans in just nine events – with a runner-up performance added to that. Detroit had just nine tournament victories entering the 2012-13 season, but with three in the fall and now four in the spring, UDM has the possibility to equal that in one year as the Titans have at least two events left in the season with the regular-season finale at Bowling Green and the conference championship.
The Titans will get right back on the links this weekend as they make the short trek across state lines to play in the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, hosted by Bowling Green State University at the Stone Ridge Golf Club. The two-round event will begin with on Saturday and conclude on Sunday.
